Primaries and Caucuses

Not all states have the same way of voting for president. Some states have a caucus and some states have a primary. Many people are confused between the difference between a caucus and a primary.

A primary is when a voter goes into a voting booth and marks off who they choose as their candidate. Some people like primaries better than caucuses because they think they are more democratic (everyone gets to participate). People also like primaries because they are hands on.

A caucus is a meeting where the delegates (people at the meeting) choose who they want to be the candidate. Each delegate gets to support one candidate. The candidate with the support of the most delegates at the end of the caucus wins.
