The Slovene Culture is composed of all kinds of facets. It is primarily a western society due to it's relationships and proximity to Austria and Italy.

The predominant religion in Slovenia in Roman Catholic. The remaining small communities are comprised of Protestants to the east, and populations of Jews and Muslims.
The arts as in most European societies are supported in Slovenia. The National Opera House is in the capital, Ljubljana. Music is also a very important part of the society.
Wine growing has been a tradition in the area for over 2000 years and today vineyards abound in many parts of the country. The areas known today as Vipava in the southwest and Murska Sabota in the northeastern part of the country are known as the wine "districts" of Slovenia.
Food is another facet of the Slovene culture. It is a Germanic style in the northern parts of the country with lots of soups, breads, meats, and pastas. In regions closer to Italy, the Italian influence can be seen in the dishes there.
Sports and leisure in Slovenia is very popular. There are soccer teams and hockey is also a popular sport. Mountaineering is another sport that endears itself to many Slovenes.

Although there are many types of recreation, the most popular and perhaps the "national" sport is skiing. With the excellent facilities and the close proximity to the mountains, skiing has prospered in Slovenia. The country hosts three World Cup events each year. The Jumping competition in Planica. The women's slalom in Maribor, and the Men's slalom competition in Kranska Gora.
