(FYI: This is the Acropolis in Athens, just thought it made a nice history icon.)





The history of this small country is very complicated. An example of this: Although Slovenia has existed as a region for millennium if not more, it has only been an autonomous, independent country since June 25, 1991(minus a very small exception). Amazing if you think of the amount of history that has transpired during it's existence.

In the early 6th AD century Slavic peoples begin to settle the Sava, Drava, and the Mura river valleys.

In the 7th century western Slavic tribes form an alliance with the Slavic Duchy of Carantania(present day Austrian Carinthia).

In the middle of the 7th century, Carantania joins the Frankish Empire and thus the Slavic peoples of this region are Christianized.

Prince Kocelj establishes an independent state. This lasts from 869-874

The Freising Manuscript is produced in the 9th century, this is the first mention of the Slovene language.

14th-16th century brings total inclusion into the Hapsburg Monarchy.

1551 Katekizem written by Primoz Trubar.

1584 Bible is first translated into Slovene by Jurij Dalmatin.

1918 Liberation from Austria-Hungary declared. Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes is formed.

1945 Fighting with the Germans ends and the process of Nationalisation begins.

1988-1990 trial of the three Slovene journalists commences. Begins call by people for an independent Slovenia. This period is known as the Slovene Spring.

January 1990 Slovene Delegation attends meeting of Yugoslav communists for the last time and then walk out.

December 1990 85% of Slovene citizens cast referendum vote in favor of independent Slovenia.

June 25, 1991 Slovene independence declared officially.

June 27, 1991 Yugoslav army attacks Slovenia.

July 7, 1991 Peace declared between Slovenia and Yugoslavia via Brioni Declaration.

December 1991 Slovenes adopt new constitution.

January 1992 European Union recognises Slovenia.

May 1992 Slovenia Joins the United Nations.

November 1992 Privatisation begins.

December 1992 Democratic elections held in a independent Slovenia and the Bi-Cameral Parliamentary Democracy begins.

September 1994 Slovenia signs the General Agreement on Trades and Tariffs (GATT) and becomes founding member of World Trade Organisation(WTO).

June 1996 Slovenia become associate member of the European Union(EU)

January 1998 Slovenia becomes a non permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
