What was Project Mercury?
Project Mercury was the United States' first man-in-space program.

 
Date of Program:
        1958 - 1963
        The manned space flights took place between 1961 - 1963

Number of flights:
         25 flights:    6 manned flights
                             19 unmanned flights
 

Program Objectives:
         1) Orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth - achieved by John Glenn on the 3rd Mercury Mission - Friendship 7
           2) Investigate man's ability to function in space
         3) To recover both man and spacecraft safety; HAVING THE ASTRONAUTS RETURN SAFELY REMAINS NASA'S TOP PRIORITY!

         They were referred to as the Mercury Seven

       L. Gordon Cooper, Jr.
       John Glenn, Jr.
       Virgil "Gus" Grissom
       Walter Schirra, Jr.
       Alan Shepard, Jr.
       Donald "Deke" Slayton
The Rockets Used:
         The Redstone Rocket
         The Atlas Rocket

The Capsule:
          On top of the rocket was a capsule, large enough to carry only one astronaut into space.
