SIS 513 Video Final:

A Digital Video that Links to Case Studies


The final intends to illustrate another medium for exposition related to understanding key issues of trade and non-economic aspects of globalization. Working in teams, groups should make videos relevant to their topics.

The use of video technology can enhance marketable skills for employment opportunities and will also enable the user to create top quality professional presentations. Video clips can also be loaded onto web sites and downloaded for viewing which is a form of Distance Learning. In today's fast paced media enhanced technologically savvy society every edge you have can make the difference.


Critical Objectives

I am looking for some thoughtful information in a video that somehow relates to some of the case studies that you are undertaking and some of the real issues that you raise. I realize that fitting a topic for a group may be difficult, so the degree of relation is not as important as is the final product. Tell a great something story and make me care about it.

The objective is to learn basic video editing, basic camera use, to not fear technology and gain critical insights into how video media is constructed. Focus on content and how your idea will be achieved. Also, this assignment could cover issues relating to Intellectual Property rights and Distance Learning.


Technical Objectives

The technical objectives are to utilize basic (1) video camera and (2) digital editing skills to capture an idea of importance related to the case studies. The programs available for consumer video production are affordable and accessible. Here are the technical criteria to consider as inputs for the final video product.

1. Time length minimum. 5 mins, maximum 15 mins.
2. Production requirements:
a. Script, shot list (storyboards) broken down by scenes do you want cut away shots, b. production needs (props etc.. everything you need the day you are shooting),
c. Release forms,
d. Locations (think carefully about access and indoor vs. outdoor locations, weather is a factor!)
3. Editing requirements:
a. Minimum of 5 cuts, (there should be more, remember attentions spans are small and be careful of the 180 degree rule!) 1 transition FX min.,
b. Titles (opening title and ending credits).
c. Additional sound, you should at the very least add sound (music) over the credits, beware of copyright rules!
4. Finally you will print your project onto a VHS tape for class viewing.

Perhaps set it up as a tour guide of the topic
Could set as teaching for a class

This conference will be broadcast live over the web.



Teams

You will really have to operate as teams to accomplish this assignment. Each person or person(s) will need to take the lead in certain aspects of the project. Some will need to specialize in: (1) scripting and storyboarding, (2) general planning, (3) camera and sound team, (3) interview or documentary speaker, (4) editing, and (5) post-production, among others.


Video Grading Criteria
Each of the four categories is worth 25 percent of the total grade.

1. The Idea

The concept, its conceptualization and it's final implementation.

2. Technology Component

The skill displayed in using web or video or other technologies. This is especially relevant to presenting the idea.

3. Exposition and Delivery of Information in a Story

The establishing of a basis of sound research ad information that adds up to knowledge of the subject.

4. Coherence of Idea and Technology

The effort and effectiveness of combining the essential element sof the the diea and the technology.
