Masters Program
The Department of Economics offers a Masters program with five distinctive tracks, a faculty that combines high quality teaching and an interest in economic policy with serious scholarship, and the special rewards of studying economics in Washington, D.C. Masters course work is intended to provide students with thorough preparation for careers with employers needing well‑trained economics professionals, including government agencies here and abroad, Congressional committees, think tanks, international and multilateral organizations, non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, and financial institutions. Many students in the program find internships or part-time jobs that eventually become full‑time jobs or that lead to careers with public and private institutions in the Washington area or elsewhere. The department's faculty and the courses they teach address a broad range of interests. The department has an especially rich offering of courses that deal with global economic issues. Most of our faculty have carried out research or taught in other countries and bring that experience to the classroom. The department offers five different tracks within the masters program: General, Development Economics, Gender Analysis in Economics, Financial Economic Policy, and Business Economics.
This degree program offers students:
- Concentrated faculty strength in major applied fields of economics and a policy-oriented curriculum
- Faculty with linkages to think tanks, research institutes, and international organizations around the globe
- Experience with state-of-the-art statistical software commonly used in applied economics research
- A Washington location that provides access to an extraordinary array of professional opportunities for trained economists
Most courses for Masters students are offered in the evening so that the degree can be completed in either full‑time or part‑time status.
