Position: Internships

Two 2005 Summer Internships Available at CDC The Nutrition and Physical Activity Team in the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at CDC has two 3-month paid internships available this summer, starting in June.

Stipend: depends on prior experience and education

Internship 1: Provide assistance in analyzing data on reducing TV time in children. The intern will be part of a small team of people at the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity working on children's TV watching. The major task will be to use qualitative software (Atlas ti) to analyze a dataset of small group interviews with children and parents about incentives and barriers to reducing TV time, including organizing, summarizing, and writing up some of the results. Other tasks might include helping to develop an expert panel meeting on TV in children, assisting in updating DNPA's Qualitative Research Inventory, analyzing quantitative data on children's television watching, and assisting in developing new survey questions about television watching.

Qualifications: · Good knowledge of health communication or mass communication theories, principles, practices, and methods · Experience in conducting qualitative (required) and quantitative data analysis · Experience using NVIvo, Atlas.ti, or other qualitative software is a plus · Good oral and written communication skills

Internship 2: Develop materials on health communication and social marketing for nutrition and physical activity for states and other audiences The intern will work with two communication staff who provide technical assistance to funded states and possibly collaborate with other Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity staff from the funded state team. The major task will be to develop case studies of how states have used or can use social marketing and/or health communication processes in addressing nutrition, physical activity, and overweight. Other activities may include identifying states' needs for communication and social marketing tools, assisting in revising a training course to be put on the Web, and assisting in developing other Web materials on health communication and social marketing.
