MAA MD-DC-VA Section Fall 2000 Meeting

American University - November 17 & 18

Friday evening's activities and the luncheon will be held in the Mary Graydon Center. All other activities will be in the Ward Building, except for one workshop in Hurst Hall. These buildings are all highlighted in yellow on the campus map.

All meeting locations are wheel chair accessible, but anyone who may require special services should contact American University Disability Services at 202-885-3312 at least 48 hours prior to the event.

TRAVEL INFORMATION
American University (AU) is located in northwest Washington, D.C. Driving directions are given below for various points of origin to the capital beltway I-495 and from the beltway to campus.

From northeast of Washington (New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore): Follow I-95 south to I-495 (Capital Beltway). Take I-495 west toward Silver Spring.

From northwest of Washington (western Pennsylvania, western Maryland): Follow I-270 south. Where I-270 divides, follow the right-hand branch toward Washington and northern Virginia. Merge with I-495.

From south or west of Washington (northern Virginia, Norfolk, Richmond, Charlottesville). Follow I-95 north or I-66 east to I-495 (Capital Beltway). Take I-495 north toward Silver Spring.

From I-495 (Capital Beltway). Take exit 39 and follow the signs for River Road (Maryland Route 190) east toward Washington. Continue east on River Road to the fifth traffic light. Turn right on to Goldsboro Road (Maryland Route 614). At the first traffic light, turn left on to Massachusetts Avenue (Maryland Route 396). Continue on Massachusetts Avenue through the first traffic circle (Westmoreland Circle). Continue one more mile to the next traffic circle (Ward Circle). Take the first right off Ward Circle on to Nebraska Avenue. The campus is on the right, while parking will be on the left. Turn left at the first signal, New Mexico, and then left into the parking lot.

Parking. Park at the Nebraska Parking Lot (see campus map), entering from New Mexico. If an attendant is on duty at the entrance, mention that you are attending the MAA meeting.

By Train and Subway. Amtrak trains regularly arrive in Washington at Union Station. Washington Metro trains run Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. until midnight, and on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until midnight. The closest Metro stop to American University (AU) is Tenleytown/AU on the Red Line. AU provides a free shuttle from the Tenleytown/AU Metro stop to campus. Directions to the shuttle are as follows: After passing through the toll barrier, ascend a long escalator. You will then come to a corridor leading to exits on either side of Wisconsin Avenue. Turn left, and exit to the east side of Wisconsin. The final exit from the metro station will take you up a short escalator. From that escalator continue straight ahead to the end of the block. You will then be at the intersection of Albemarle and 40th Streets, the location of the shuttle stop. There are signs there for both the American University Shuttle and the Metro Bus System. Special conference rates are available at the following hotels. They are all within 3 miles from the main campus of American University, where the meeting will be held. The hotels are shown on the map of the campus neighborhood.

Day’s Inn, 4400 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C., 20008. Conference rate is $94, for single, double, triple or quadruple, November 16 - 18. Parking is $8.00 per day. Call 202-244-5600 for reservations. Mention the group code MAAC. The last day to reserve a room at the conference rate is November 3. The hotel is one block from the Van Ness metro station. This station is the first station on the Red Line south of the Tenleytown/American University station.

Holiday Inn, 5520 Wisconsin Avenue, Chevy Chase, Maryland 20815. Conference rate is $109, for single or double, including parking, November 16 - 19. Call 301-656-1500 Ext.7105 for reservations. Mention the group code MAA. The last day to reserve a room at the conference rate is October 24. The hotel is one block and a half from the Friendship Heights metro station. This station is the first station on the Red Line north of the Tenleytown/American University station.

Embassy Suites, at The Chevy Chase Pavilion, 4300 Military Road, NW, Washington, D.C., 20015. Conference rate is $139, for single or double, November 16 - 18. The rate includes a two-room suite with a living room and a bedroom, together with breakfast in the morning, cocktail reception in the evening, and unlimited access to the Health and Swim Club.
