News and Announcements

4/29/09 Our final exam will be Monday, May 4, at 5:30 - 8 PM in our usual classroom.  I  have posted  important info about the final exam and grades  including time and place for a review session.   Remember to bring your  portfolio to the exam, and be sure you include an uptodate coversheet for the homework section.
4/22/09 The material on line integrals is based on an excerpt from a calculus textbook by Thomas and Finney.  It is available in the documents section of our blackboard website -- see Thomas and Finney part 1.  Here are comments and recommended homework problems from that excerpt.
4/19/09 I  have graded the n-fold integration problem set, and will return it tomorrow.  Here are solutions for a few of the problems.  On Wednesday (April 22), the last polished work collection will be due. Actually, I will accept papers until about 3:30 pm on Thursday. There are only 2 problems in this set: the Lagrange Multipliers problem 2, and the extra problem (tasks a-e) for the set on double integrals.

Our last class is a week from Monday.  That will be reserved for teaching evaluations and review.  In particular, you should have done the problems from
the handout "Integration on Manifolds," and the ones I assign this week on line integrals.  Although I will not collect those assignments, you will be responsible for them on the final, and they should be included in your portfolio.
4/13/09 I  have graded the homework from the 2nd Apostol excerpt, and will return it today.  Please look at this note for problem 17 and solution to 17d.    Note that the extra problem (parts a-e)  is now designated as a star problem on the assignment sheet.  Here is a hint for task d.  It also shows a solution for task h.  I have also written up a detailed solution for task f.  Some may wish to work it out for themselves before looking at my solution.  All that is really necessary is algebra and a little bit of trig, although it is a bit involved.  It took me a couple of hours to get it completely right.  But sometimes that's the way math is -- it can take a long time to work through the details of a problem, even when you have a clear idea of what you have to do.

One more thing.  I have written up an outline for integration on manifolds.  That will be the subject of tonight's class, and possibly part of Wednesday's.  The problems in the outline will be due on Wed, 4/22.
4/10/09 I  have posted problems for Wed, 4/15 on the assignment sheet  and I updated the Class Activity Log webpage
4/5/09 I  have graded the Lagrange Multipliers problem set, and will return it tomorrow.  Note that problem 2 is now designated as a star problem on the assignment sheet.  Also, here are a few comments on the assignment.    Don't forget exam corrections are due tomorrow.
4/3/09 I  have posted problems for Wed, 4/8 on the assignment sheet.  Don't forget that exam corrections are due Monday.   Also, note that  I have posted two additional excerpts from Apostol as docments at our class blackboard site.  The new homework assignment is connected with the first of these additional excerpts, called Apostol Excerpt2.
3/27/09 Exam results have been posted and you can find your score on blackboard.
3/23/09 I  have graded the homework from the Apostol excerpt, and will return it today.  Note that problem 18 is now designated as a star problem on the assignment sheet.  Also, here are a few comments on the assignment.
3/22/09 See this review outline for exam 2.
3/19/09 I updated the Assignments and Class Activity Log webpages.  I also added a new assignment on Lagrange Multipliers.  That won't be collected until after the exam, but you should look at the first few problems at least to help prepare for the exam.  Watch for information about the exam to be posted sometime this weekend.
3/16/09 I updated the Assignments and Class Activity Log webpages.  I have also posted an (updated) outline of assignments and activities for the next few weeks.  Note that the assignment from the Apostol excerpt is problems 5, 16, 18, 25.
3/11/09 I  have graded the homework from the tangent plane handout, and will return it Monday 3/16.  Note that problem 4 is now designated as a star problem on the assignment sheet.  Also, here are a few comments on the assignment.
3/6/09 I updated the Assignments and Class Activity Log webpages.  The activity log says something about the homework for after spring break, and the assgnments page has some hints on the problems.
3/1/09 I  have graded the homework from 2.3, and will return it tomorrow.  Note that problems 2 and 5 are now designated as star problems on the assignment sheet.  Also, here are a few comments on the assignment.   I also corrected and updated the list of problems for 2.3.
2/26/09 I updated the Assignments and Class Activity Log webpages, reducing the assignment for next wednesday.
2/22/09 Here are some responses to comments students made about the course, including more details about how portfolios will be graded.  Also, here are some comments about the polished problem set I just finished marking.  Finally, here are a handout on tangent planes and an excerpt on max/min problems (note - its almost 7 mb) from Apostol's calculus book.  We'll be working from the two handouts this week.  They include homework problems.
2/14/09 Here are comments on the exam, and here is a graphics display to illustrate one example from the comments.
2/13/09 Exam results have been posted, as well as an assignment for Monday.  Plus I updated the Assignments and Class Activity Log webpages.
2/11/09 Here are solutions to some of the problems from the second homework set for Section 2.2.
2/8/09 See this review outline for exam 1.
2/5/09 I updated the Assignments and Class Activity Log webpages.   There is a new assignment for section 2.1.  We will discuss that in class on Monday.  Please complete the assignment by then -- this will help with your review for the exam.  Also, you should be working on revising the * problems that have been returned so far.
2/1/09 Assignment 2 materials: comments and solutions.  Star problems are 2 and 3.
1/29/09
I updated the Assignments and Class Activity Log webpages.  I removed the schedule of topics and due dates because they are no longer valid.
1/25/09 Assignment 1 materials: comment sheet,  selected model solutions, outline for proving equality of two sets.   Star problems denoted on assignment page.
