Introduction to Analysis -- Fall 2011
Information about the first exam
Our first exam will be Wednesday, 9/28. Everyone should bring
his or her portfolio to the exam for me to review. You should
also
remember to pick it up after the exam as you leave. For this
review, I am just checking that everyone is building a portfolio as
requested, and a couple of the sections will be empty. For more
information about requirements for your portfolio, click here.
The first assignment after the exam is to revise any of the plus
problems you wish to resubmit. There have been four assigned so
far: 1.9, section 1 extra problem 2, 4.7b, and section 2 extra problem
2. I will collect the revised plus problems on Wednesday, 10/5.
I expect to return the graded exams on Monday, 10/3. Every
student will be asked to prepare a set of exam corrections, as
described here. The exam
corrections will be due Monday 10/10.
What to know for the exam.
The exam will cover sections 1 - 5 and 7 - 9 of the text.
Know the statements of definitions and theorems, and also know the
Peano, field, order, and completeness axioms. Be prepared to
prove the theorems we have seen, and to use them to prove new
results. Also be prepared to demonstrate your understanding of
definitions by applying them in given examples, or by producing
examples with specificied properties. We have not covered much in
the way of procedural knowledge, but you should be able to find sups,
infs, and limits as in some of the homework exercises.
Some samples of the various kinds of problems that might appear on
the exam are proved in this handout.
