Analysis 1 -- Fall 2011

Results for Exam 1

The class did a very good job on exam 1.  I will be handing back the graded papers on Monday 10/3.

The histogram below shows all of the scores (with half points rounded up)  for the exam. It shows, for example, that one student scored a 99, one scored a 97, and 2/3 of the class above 90.

These results confirm what was already pretty evident from the homework: just about everyone in this class is working diligently to learn the material, and has the scholastic ability to learn the necessary definitions, theorems, and methods.  Going forward, the material will probably get a little more difficult, and some of the proofs may be challenging for many students, so the scores on the next exam may go down some.  But this first exam shows that nearly everyone has a solid foundation for the material to come.    For the students who scored below 80, I am a little concerned, especially if your homework record is weak.  Please make an appointment to have a discussion with me about progress in the course to date.

You can find your individual score posted on Blackboard.  Contact me if you need assistance accessing that. PLEASE review the score posted for you on blackboard and confirm that it is the same as what appears on your exam paper. If they are not the same, let me know.

If you are dissatisfied with your performance on the exam, please make an appointment to see me.  I may be able to suggest ways to make your preparations more effective for the remaining exams.  And I am open to any suggestions about how I can make the course more supportive of your efforts.

Specific Comments About Exam Problems and Grading.

Please see one page of comments here.

Comments Requested on Course.

As already announced, I'd like input from everyone on how the course is going so far.    How do you feel about the pace of the course? About the assignments and the exam?  Is class time useful for you?  Do you have any suggestions that would make the class more satisfying or more effective from your point of view?   Also, let me know how the grading of homework, especially plus problems, is working for you.  Do you find the solutions and comments I have been writing up useful?  Both the grading and producing the solutions are pretty time consuming, so if they are not helpful I should probably find a more productive way to use that time.  Please  take a few minutes to visit blackboard and post your comments anonymously.

Exam Corrections.
Everyone who scored below 95 is asked to prepare a set of exam corrections, due Monday 10/10.  For detailed instructions, please see this webpage
