Introduction to Analysis -- Fall 2011
Information about the second exam
Our second exam will be Monday, 10/31. Everyone should again
bring
his or her portfolio to the exam for me to review. You should
also
remember to pick it up after the exam as you leave.
The first assignment after is the second set of problems from
section 13. It has already been posted on the assignment
page. I will not be collecting revised + problems again for a few
more weeks.
I will try to return the graded exams on Wednesday, 11/2.
Every
student will be asked to prepare a set of exam corrections again.
They will be due a week after you get back your exam.
What to know for the exam.
The exam will cover sections 10-12 and 13 up to and including
theorem 13.10.
As on the first exam, you should know the statements of definitions and
theorems, and be prepared to
both explain what the theorems mean and provide proofs, except in cases
where the proofs are very complicated. Also be prepared to apply
theorems to prove new results. As one way of demonstrating your
understanding of
definitions, be able to verify that they hold (or do not hold) in
specific examples, or to make up examples of your own. For
example, you should be able to find limsups, liminfs,
subsequences, limits of subsequences, the set of subsequential limits
of a sequence, interiors, boundaries, and closures of sets,
and be able to substantiate your conclusions.
I did not have time to prepare any sample questions for this exam.
