News and Announcements

4/29/2009 Important Announcements about the final: (1) every student may bring one 3x5 index card with anything written on one side of the card as a reference for the exam.  One side of the card must be blank.  The other side should be hand written (as opposed to photo reduced ...).  (2) Don't forget to bring your portfolio.
4/24/2009
Our final exam will be Thursday, 4/30, from 11:20 to 1:50.  NOTE THE STARTING TIME IS EARLIER THAN OUR NORMAL CLASS TIME.  Read this review guide for the exam.  Also, I have scheduled a review session for Wednesday, 4/29, starting at 5:30PM in our usual classroom.
4/21/2009
In class tomorrow (Wednesday) we will be discussing a method for solving differential equations.  It is called separation of variables, and appears in our text in section 9.3.  Pages 580 and 581 will give you an introduction to this method.  In addition, I will explain in class how we can include limits of integration (that is, endpoints on the integrals).   You can skip everything from example 3 through example 5, but should look at Mixing Problems and example 6.  To supplement the material in the text, here is a handout listing several kinds of problems that can be analyzed using the method of separation of variables.  Note that a few problems from section 9.3 have been assigned (see the assignment sheet).
4/19/2009
For class tomorrow (Monday) we will go on to section 5.5 of the text.   I will discuss an example that is connected with the tank model we have studied in the past.  Here is a handout with the details of the model.    After 5.5 we will take another brief look at differential equations.  There are some assigned problems on the assignment sheet from section 9.3 for this material.  Our last topic will be from section 6.5.  Please disregard the problems on the assignment sheet from section 6.2.  We will not be covering that material.
4/5/2009
Exam 3 results now available.  Summary here, individual grades on blackboard.
3/28/2009
Our third exam will be Thursday, 4/2.  Read this review guide for the exam (including recommended study problems).
3/26/2009
Assignment for Monday:  hand in homework from sections 4.3 and 4.4.  Also work on at least some of the problems from 4.5 and 4.7.  We will discuss those on Monday.  In fact, both Monday and Wednesday next week will be devoted to discussing homework problems -- no new material will be presented.  If you have questions about the problems assigned from section 4.9, those can be raised in class either Monday or Wednesday as well.
  3/26/2009
Here is a special max/min problem to work on before Monday.
3/25/2009
Look at this sheet about our schedule.  Also, note that tomorrow homework from section 4.2 is due, and we are pretending that the homework from 4.3 and 4.4 are due, so that we can discuss those.
3/9/2009
Exam results now available.  Summary here, individual grades on blackboard.
3/6/2009
Read about assignments for Monday after spring break, 3/16/09.
3/4/2009
New documents posted:  Solutions to the sample exam.  A solution to the plus problem for section 3.8.
Reminder: if you are keeping a portfolio, bring it to the exam for review.  Your portfolio must follow my guidelines.  Remember to put your polished (plus) problems in a separate section, and put your first exam and corrections into another section.

2/27/2009
Our second exam will be Thursday, 3/5.  Read this review guide for the exam (including a sample exam).
2/23/2009
In class today I will be making a power point presentation on differential equations.  The ppt file is here  or choose a pdf version.
2/15/2009
Reminder: homework from sections 3.2 and 3.3 is due Monday, 2/16.  Exam corrections are due the same day.
2/9/2009
Read about exam corrections, due 2/16/09.
2/6/2009
Exam results now available.  Summary here, individual grades on blackboard.
2/6/2009
Read about assignments for next Monday, 2/9/09.
2/3/2009
New documents posted:  Solutions to the sample exam.  A model solution to the plus problem for section 2.7.
Reminder: if you are keeping a portfolio, bring it to the exam for review.  Your portfolio must follow my guidelines.  Remember to put your polished (plus) problems in a separate section, and put all of your computer labs in the projects section.

1/30/2009
Our first exam will be Thursday, 2/5.  Read this review guide for the exam (including a sample exam).
1/27/2009 Homework from section 2.4 is due Thursday, 1/29, but the plus problem for section 2.4 will not be due until Monday, 2/2.  Plus problem solutions from section 2.3 will be returned Wed, and a handout is here.  Review these before you work on the plus problem for 2.4.
1/26/2009 Computer Lab: This Thursday (1/29/08) we will have a computer lab.  Note a new location: the spa lab in the subbasement of the Ward building.  Go into Ward, go to the far end of the building (away from Hurst) and go down to level below the basement.  Go directly to the lab at the start of  class.
1/15/2009 Homework from sections 2.1 and 2.2 will be due this Thursday, 1/22.  Please keep "+" problems separate from the other homework, because I will keep the "+" problems and pass the other papers to a student assistant, Katie.  It will make things easier for Katie and me if you staple your pages together.  Staple all the regular pages in one packet, and the "+" problems in a second packet.
1/15/2009
You are not required to finish today's "epsilon" lab.  You SHOULD be working on sections 2.1 and 2.2.
1/12/2009 PLAN NOW for Spring Break!  We have an exam on the Thursday before Spring Break.  Make travel plans with that in mind.
