ELEMENTARY MATH MODELS
Order Aplenty and a Glimpse of Chaos
Classroom resources for use with Elementary Mathematical Models by Dan Kalman.
This site provides information that may be useful for teachers using my Elementary Mathematical Models book in a course. It includes a list of errors that have been found in the book, as well as access to materials I have developed for use in my course at American University. Some of the materials available here were developed for use with Mathwright computer modules, and make reference to features of this software. The software (which runs in all Windows systems) and the computer modules are available free. Use the link in the list below. Even without using Mathwright, the materials available here should be adaptable for use with other computational tools, and I hope that teachers will find them useful as a source of ideas. Using the Mathwright materials, the handouts provided should be in a form that can be given to students without further modification.
Another resource is a compilation of supplementary exercises. This is available from the MAA to teachers who adopt the book for a course, but it can also be obtained here over the web.
In addition to the handout materials, I have started a series of commentaries with suggestions for teaching this material. I will add to it as ideas occur to me. Other teachers are encouraged to send me their own ideas, and I will post them here.
Use the links below to access the list of errors, the teaching commentaries, or course materials in the form of supplementary problems, worksheets or group projects. For each of the latter, there is a brief description, as well as a link to download a copy suitable for use as a class handout. There is also a link in the list below to instructions for obtaining the computer modules and software.
An EMM workshop was held at Columbus State University, Georgia, in May, 1998.
