Professor Dan Kalman Receives Two Writing Awards
Professor Dan Kalman received two writing awards from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) at its August, 2003, annual summer meeting. The MAA awards prizes annually for outstanding writing in each of its journals. Professor Kalman received an Allendoerfer Award for his paper Doubly Recursive Multivariate Automatic Differentiation, in Mathematics Magazine, and a Polya Award for An Underdetermined Linear System for GPS, which appeared in the College Mathematics Journal. The MAA has a webpage with full details, including citations for all of the MAA's writing awards.
Professor Kalman is an accomplished writer and lecturer, particularly when it comes to explaining mathematics in ways that non-specialists can understand. He has written many articles for the student mathematics magazine MATH HORIZONS, and has received three other MAA writing awards in past years. He is a popular invited speaker at student math conferences and student math club events. Dr. Kalman's teaching innovations at American University include authoring a textbook for a new kind of introductory mathematics course, and developing computer activities for students using software called Mathwright.
