ANNOUNCING SONYA KOVALEVSKY DAY

(Sofia Vasilevna Kovalevskaia Day)

Saturday, March 25th, 2000

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at American University is proud to announce our sixth annual Sonya Kovalevsky Day. The day is intended as a celebration of mathematics and will include an exciting array of speakers and hands-on workshops. Speakers include Dr. S. Brent Morris of the National Security Agency – "Magic Tricks, Card Shuffling, and Dynamic Computer Memories," and Prof. Dan Kalman of American University – "A Square Pie For the Simpsons." The workshops will be "A Crash Course on Infinity" and "Mathematics on the Web." To review a tentative schedule of events, click here.

This year, however, there is also a new twist to SK Day. We are inviting only teachers of science and mathematics from the greater metropolitan DC area. We want to make the day relaxing, yet informative and enriching. We are also running a forum – "Practical Connections Between the Math Ed Curriculum and Your Classroom,'' which will be chaired by Prof. Lyn Stallings of American University. Our intent here is to make you an active part of SK Day, by giving you an opportunity to share your ideas on what you need for the classroom.

We sincerely hope that you can attend Sonya Kovalevsky Day. There is no cost. However, to assist with our planning, we ask that you register by filling out the form below. Please respond by March 15th. Travel directions and our location on campus can be found by clicking here. We look forward to having you join us.

Sincerely,
Prof. John P. Nolan, Chair,
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
