About Honors 101

Honors 101 is a student-led and student-run orientation program for incoming Honors freshmen. Incoming students are grouped together and are paired with mentors, who are current upper-class Honors students, to form various small groups.

Mentors serve as key points of contact during the new student's transition to AU and are a resource and guide for anything from study groups to the sights of DC.

New students meet their Honors 101 mentors, fellow group members, and the Honors staff at the Honors 101 Kick-Off, which is held on the Saturday before classes start in the fall. The Honors 101 Kick-Off does not replace the regular Welcome Week activities but rather provides a setting for the entire incoming Honors class to meet in the same place at the same time. Honors 101 co-chairs work hard to plan the Kick-Off. Get ready to experience the true spirit of AU, Honors-style!

In addition to the Kick-Off, Honors 101 incorporates activities, planned and run by the respective Honors 101 mentors for each group. Honors 101 groups meet on a regular basis for the fall semester to follow through with various transitional issues and to develop a cohesive Honors community.

An Honors 101 "class," HNRS-001, is scheduled for Wednesday at 3:35 - 5:20 p.m. every fall semester. Incoming Honors freshmen will be registered for Honors 101 by their academic advisor along with their other classes. Honors 101 group activities will range from sessions on how to find an internship to finding the best cafe in DC!

Mentors were in your shoes once, so take full advantage of their expertise and guidance! There are no fees associated with Honors 101.

2009 Kick Off

The Kick Off begins on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. in Ward 1 with the "Honors 101 Extravaganza." Afterward, students will break up into their individual mentor groups to meet each other for the first time. Once acquainted, mentor groups will begin the great AU scavenger hunt in the quest for glory. After the scavenger hunt winner is announced, mentor groups will proceed to the Leonard Picnic Area where the Student Honors Board will be hosting the official Honors 101 Kick Off Barbecue, which will include hamburgers, hotdogs, pulled chicken and pork, salads, drinks and dessert.
