About Student Honors Board

Elected members of the Student Honors Board (SHB) represent Honors students, serve as a liaison to the Honors Program Director and staff, and plan events and service projects for the entire Honors community to enjoy.

Student Honors Board events have included inner-city tutoring  a Halloween maize maze, an annual Thanksgiving dinner for the Honors community, sporting events, “Brain Bowl” quiz, annual spring barbecue and much more. The SHB holds meetings weekly during the school year. These regular meetings are open to all Honors students.

Read the Student Honors Board Bylaws.

If you are interested in volunteering for one of the Student Honors Board Committees, or in participating in some way, please send an e-mail to shb@american.edu. You can also contact the University Honors Program (see Contact Us).

Elections

As of Spring 2009, the Student Honors Board will have two separate elections during the academic year, one each fall and one each spring. The spring elections are held during the first full week of April to fill eight open seats for the following year. Fall elections are held during the first full week of fall semester to fill the remaining five open seats on the board for that year.

Members elected in the spring election will serve a one-year term ending when the following spring term ends. Spring election winners will be eligible to serve as officers on the executive board, including as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Director of Communications. Once elected, members will hold an internal election for the available officer positions.

Any members elected to SHB in the fall election, however, will not have an internal officer election, as those positions will already have been filled during the spring elections. Otherwise, members elected are full fledged members of the board who's terms shall also expire at the end of that academic year's spring semester. Should an executive board position remain unfilled from the spring elections, members elected in the fall are eligible to fill the vacancy by appoitment after they are successfully elected to the boad.
