Seda Demiralp is an Assistant Professor in Comparative and Regional Studies at the School of International Service at American University, Washington DC. Her research areas include Middle East politics, entrepreneurs and politics, political Islam, and Kurdish nationalism. Her most recent study explores the role of Islamist businessmen in the transformation of Islamic radicalism in Turkey and investigates the shifting economic interests of Islamist businessmen following Turkey's rapprochement with the European Union. She studies the way in which Islamist businessmen "discovered" the European markets and moved to a more Western-friendly agenda where they controlled the radicals in the movement who could jeopardize their newly built alliances with their Western partners. Dr. Demiralp's article "The Rise of Islamic Capital and the Decline of Islamic Radicalism in Turkey" is forthcoming in the Journal of Comparative Politics. Her new research project investigates the entrepreneurial activities of Turkish and Kurdish businessmen in Northern Iraq and their mediating role in the ongoing conflict between Turkish and Kurdish hardliners. Prof. Demiralp teaches courses on Middle East Politics and Research Methods.
