Michelle Egan is an Associate Professor and Coordinator
for the European and Russian Studies program in the Comparative and Regional
Studies Division. Her geographic expertise is in Western Europe, with
a secondary focus on Central and Eastern Europe.
Awarded a Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration, her work focuses
on regional integration, transatlantic relations, comparative political
economy, constitutionalism and defense and security issues. Professor
Egan has received a number of awards and fellowships including : German
Marshall Fund Fellowship, Robert Bosch Fellowship; German-American Academic
Council Fellowship, Jean Monnet Fellowship; and Howard Foundation Fellowship.
She is currently European Council Co-Chair; and member of the American
Consortium for EU Studies (ACES), a nationally recognized center of excellence
on the EU. She has been appointed the co-editor of a new series on the
European Union published by Palgrave, and the forum editor for EUSA Political
Economy Section. She has been a research fellow at the Center for European
for European Policy Studies, a premier think-tank in Brussels, and a research
associate at the Atlantic Council in Washington DC.
As a scholar, Professor Egan has published a variety of books and articles focusing on comparative politics and international relations of Europe. Her books include: Constructing a European Market: Standards, Regulation and Governance (Oxford University Press); Creating a Transatlantic Marketplace: Government Policies and Business Strategies (Manchester University Press) and Single Markets: Economic Integration in Europe and the United States (Forthcoming Oxford University Press). She participates with think-tanks on projects related to transatlantic relations, European security and European economic and regulatory reform. Currently, she is conducting projects on transatlantic economic relations, and emerging security and defense integration in Europe.
As an educator, Michelle Egan is the recipient of a number of fellowships and awards for her teaching and curriculum development work. She has received awards from the British Politics group of the APSA, the European Union Studies Association, and American University for a curriculum development grant for European studies, and recently for Policy Analysis. She received the Outstanding Teaching Award in SIS in 2000, Outstanding Teaching in Political Science from the APSA in 2002, Innovative Use of Technology Award in 2002, and an Internship Faculty Supervisor Award in 2001.
Professor Michelle Egan teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses including: The European Union, Relations of West European Nations, International Relations of Europe, Comparative European Politics, Economics, and Society, Transatlantic Relations, Multinationals and Globalization, and Competition in an Interdependent World. She is also the faculty advisor for the European Studies Certificate which is open to students from all disciplines and fields at the graduate and undergraduate level who wish to focus their studies on Europe.
Professor Egan is the American University Faculty Coordinator for the Mitchell and Marshall Fellowships. She works with students on various fellowships and scholarships including Bosch, Marshall, Mitchell, Boren, Adenauer, Rotary and Fulbright. She works with the Office of Merit Awards and Scholarships in the Career Center to identify prospective students, engage in interview training and preparation, and work individually with students on the application process. Her students have successfully gained scholarships and fellowships to study in a variety of schools, universities and institutes throughout Europe and United States.
Professor Egan has conducted research in a number of European countries, and has supervised a range of student research projects on comparative regional integration (EU, Mercosur), foreign and security policy (national and European); defense integration, territorial politics, devolution/center-periphery relations); women and politics; immigration; welfare states; industrial and technology policy; enlargement; European law; constitutionalism; and political parties.
Professionally, she has served on a number of fellowship panels including the National Fulbright Competition and the German Marshall Fund Fellowship Competition. Professor Egan is also a member of several editorial boards and professional organizations.
