The American University in Cairo (AUC) is the Middle East's premier English-language institution and an essential contributor to the social, political, and cultural life of the Arab world. AUC provides a vibrant, international forum for reasoned argument, spirited debate, and global understanding among the faculty, staff, and students who gather in its halls. Students on the program take courses alongside AUC's graduate student population and can find challenging courses among AUC's offerings in any of the following areas:

  • Gender and Women's Studies
  • International Human Rights Law
  • Middle Eastern Studies
  • Political Science (International Relations)
  • Sociology

The John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement also supports students engaged in internship positions, which are available in many areas pertinent to international relations.

All courses at AUC are taught in English. Students take three courses at AUC in one semester, all of which must be approved by the SIS Office of Academic Affairs (Graduate Advising) ahead of time, and receive nine SIS credits. Students wishing to pursue Arabic language study may do so by direct-enrolling in courses at AUC. The application process involves an application to both SIS and AUC. A mandatory international student orientation takes place at AUC prior to the start of the semester for those accepted into the program.

With the ancient Pyramids of Giza overlooking the busy streets of the city, Cairo is a dynamic location for overseas study.

Fall 2009 application deadline: March 2
