FACULTY RESEARCH SUPPORT AWARDS
FOR
SUMMER 2007 AND AY 2007-08
As part of the university’s commitment to support faculty research and creative work, the Faculty Research Award program is sponsored by the dean of academic affairs in consultation with the school/college deans. Applications for Summer 2007 and AY 2007-08 awards are due in the office of academic affairs by Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Faculty should consult with their school/college dean regarding internal deadlines.
The research award is designed to provide essential support, either time or funds, to enable faculty to achieve greater research productivity. This competition allows for an academic year course release or summer support. It permits applicants to submit a single request for funding a 12-month research agenda--that is, for activities which begin after graduation in the spring, and continue throughout the following academic year. Receipt of the award is contingent upon the faculty member's return to the university the following academic year.
The definition of research is broad and includes creative work as well as experimental investigations, historical studies, and other scholarly endeavors that advance knowledge in the applicant's discipline or contribute to creative projects that enhance the arts or humanities. It is expected that these activities ultimately will be judged favorably by others in the discipline and lead to peer recognition. Preparation of textbooks is funded only if the scholarship involved makes a significant contribution to pedagogy or is an original contribution to the field.
The maximum funding of an award under this competition is $10,000; projects with smaller budgets are welcome. Budget items may include summer salary for the primary investigator, graduate student support during the summer and/or the academic year, travel to off-campus sites to conduct research or present findings at professional conferences, purchase of necessary research equipment, or other expenses directly related to the proposed research. All expenditures must comply with the university's procurement procedures. All international travel expenses must comply with the university’s international travel policy.
You are encouraged to review your future research plans and to take advantage of this opportunity to advance those plans. This award program supports both ongoing research efforts and projects of faculty members who wish to move into new areas of research. If appropriate for your discipline and area of research, you are encouraged to consider pilot projects and to submit proposals for preliminary studies, particularly if such studies will increase the likelihood of gaining external funds to support this research program.
Applicants are responsible for early consultation with their teaching unit administrators and school/college dean or the university librarian concerning plans for submission.
Proposals will be evaluated by the school/college dean, and the highly ranked proposals will be forwarded to the dean of academic affairs for consideration.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY AND PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES
- All full-time faculty members with tenure, tenure-track appointments, or faculty on multi-year contracts are eligible to submit proposals. Please note, however, that tenured faculty may not receive an award two years in a row.
- Faculty members should consult with their unit concerning internal deadlines and eligibility.
- The awards are for the period May 2007 - April 2008 and may not be deferred.
- A maximum of one course release will be funded.
- Summer support will be granted at a flat rate of $5000. Award recipients granted $5000 in summer salary may teach one summer course. Summer salary along with an academic year course release will not be funded.
- All full-time faculty members are expected to teach at least one course each semester of the academic year unless on an approved leave.
- Faculty members receiving an award may not teach on an overload basis during AY 2007-08.
- Awards may be used for any purpose related to the research plan described in the proposal. A separate justification should be provided for all expenditures in excess of $500. Funds may not, however, be used to supplement the applicant's salary during the academic year. Amounts budgeted for graduate student support should be equitable with teaching unit awards to other comparably qualified students.
- An award is contingent upon the faculty member's return to the university during AY 2008-09 (or the following year, if on leave during AY 2008-09).
- Awardees are expected to make a presentation on the results of their project at an appropriate university occasion if so requested.
- A written, final report (which may include proposals for external funding, abstracts of papers presented at professional meetings or descriptions of presentations or performances relevant to the funded research, or other appropriate submissions) must document the progress made under this award. Copies of the report are due to your school/college dean and to the office of the dean of academic affairs by November 1, 2008.
