The American Consortium on EU Studies

ACES Research Seed Grants

Sponsor : The American Consortium on European Union Studies (ACES) is a consortium of five universities officially designated as an EU Center in the United States by the European Commission, Brussels.   ACES members consist of American University, Georgetown University, George Mason University, The George Washington University and The Johns Hopkins University.   The ACES Research Seed Grants are made possible with the support of the European Commission, Brussels and other funds raised by ACES.

Who Is Eligible : All ACES faculty and qualified researchers from other D.C. academic institutions, the private sector, and international and multinational organizations are eligible. Applicants are encouraged to submit collaborative and/or multidisciplinary proposals.

Eligible Research Topics : Theory-and policy-oriented research with an emphasis on the European Union, its member states, US-EU transatlantic relations and other contemporary EU-related issues. The ACES multidisciplinary focus encourages analysis and policy dialogue of these topics in a variety of fields, including political science, economics, business, finance, law, science and technology, public health and others.   Topics include but are not limited to:

• Economic and Monetary Union and the Euro;
• Enlargement;
• Integration and Harmonization;
• Foreign and Security Policy;
• US-EU Relations;  
• Trade and Investment; and
• Human Rights Law

Funding : Awards will be given to the author(s) of each research grant selected.   The number of awards will depend on the availability of funding in any given year.   For AY2006-07, an award of up to $1,000 will be given for the selected research grant.

Proposal Requirements :

1. Cover page with title, contact information and affiliation of author(s).

2. Description of the proposal (not more than 2 pages and 12 font point) containing the following:

• Summary of topic
• Summary of methodology
• Description of proposed working paper in relation to other research
• Date of submission
•      (The 2 page description should not include author(s)' name or affiliation)

3. Selected bibliography.

4. Author(s) C.V.   

5. Budgetary items (travel, research equipment, etc.)

Electronic proposals strongly preferred; however, hard copies also accepted.

Grant Proposal Review And Selection Procedures :

• There are two submission deadlines:    January 15, 2006 and May 15, 2006.
• Please submit proposal to Dr. Scheherazade Rehman, European Union Research Center, School of Business, The George Washington University, 2023 G St, NW, Lisner Hall # 230, Washington, DC 20052 or eucenter@gwu.edu, rehman@gwu.edu or fax 202-994-6813.
• Notification of selection is usually within 4-6 weeks.
• All qualified grant proposals will be evaluated through a "blind review" process. The proposals will be reviewed jointly by the ACES Proposal Review and Selection Committee. The author(s) of the selected grants will receive a letter stating the terms and conditions of the award.
