COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Civil War Institute
This week-long program introduces participants to the key causes and consequences of the Civil War by exploring its remnants and remembrances in the Washington, D.C., area. The intensive program combines morning presentations and discussions with afternoon field trips. Sites include Harper’s Ferry, Antietam, Arlington National Cemetery, the Sherman and Grant Memorials, Howard University, Fort Stevens, the Frederick Douglass Home, Ford’s Theater, and a full-day trip to Richmond. The course fee covers local travel costs, admission fees, and some lunches. A noncredit option is also available. For more information, go to Civil War Institute.


Nuclear Studies Institute
Acquire the knowledge of nuclear history, culture, and policy to understand the historical roots and psychological and political dimensions of current nuclear weapons programs and options. Participants gain an introductory intellectual and experiential background to analyze policy options and take the lead in international efforts to build a just and peaceful world. The institute consists of two courses at American University and a study tour in Japan. Participants may take either or both of the courses, in addition to the study tour, allowing them to earn up to 9 credits. A noncredit option is also available. TESOL Institute
American University’s TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Institute offers two sessions of course work that enable students to complete AU’s TESOL certificate program in one summer. Topics include principles of linguistics, English-language teaching, the structure of English, and second-language acquisition. Students enrolled in TESOL Institute courses are invited to participate in additional activities including lectures, short courses, workshops, receptions, and other social events. Film and Digital Media Institute
The School of Communication’s Film and Digital Media Institute offers an exciting summer of intensive courses and workshops geared towards both experienced film and digital media professionals and beginners. The courses and workshops are taught by American University faculty and local professionals and are scheduled during evenings and weekends. SIS Summer Abroad Programs: Seminars and Internships
Each summer, the School of International Service (SIS) offers a number of short-term, experiential programs abroad for graduate and advanced undergraduate students from any university or college in the USA. The intensive schedule of these programs allows students with academic year commitments to complement their studies with an experience abroad. The programs are faculty-led and content-specific for students who wish to concentrate on a specific region or topic area. Each program offers ample opportunity to interact with local and regional leaders, conduct field research, and engage in challenging internship positions. This year, join SIS Summer Abroad Programs in Israel and Palestine, South Africa, Malaysia, China, Brussels, South Korea, and the UAE. Contemporary Human Rights Practice: Tools and Tactics for Practitioners and Students
An intensive, interactive program addressing the needs of students and practitioners for training in human rights advocacy. For more information, go to Human Rights Institute.

Peacebuilding and Development Institute
The Summer Professional Training Program provides training to development workers, government officials, conflict resolution practitioners, graduate students, and others working in conflict zones to complement their daily field work. It is one of the first practical training programs specifically designed to bridge the fields of peacebuilding and development. Experienced trainers guide participants through hands-on sessions to explore the relationships between religion, culture, human rights, the media, gender, and applied theories in peacebuilding and development work. Participants explore innovative methods while expanding their knowledge and skills in a participatory and interactive learning environment. SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Campaign Management Institute (CMI)
This institute comprehensively covers campaign techniques, strategies, and tactics with emphasis on recent technological developments. Students develop their expertise by utilizing the extensive personnel and organizational resources in Washington, D.C. Group seminars and campaign simulations develop and refine participants’ ability to coordinate successful political campaigns. A noncredit option is also available. Public Affairs and Advocacy Institute (PAAI)
Explore the lobbying profession through an intensive two-week program. The format allows participants to become immersed in the strategies and tactics of organized interests seeking to influence the federal policy-making process. In addition to the applied aspects of the public affairs field, the institute places lobbying in a more theoretical perspective by linking the practical components of political influence with broader issues of democratic political representation. Women and Political Leadership Skills Institute
This seminar is designed to provide students with hands-on training in political leadership skills. It begins with a background in women and politics and the challenges women have faced entering and advancing in the field. The next sessions offer training in campaigns, polling, fundraising, media, writing, and networking skills. Students then practice these skills on Capitol Hill and have the opportunity to shadow a staffer of a woman member of Congress. The seminar includes public speaking workshops and media training. WASHINGTON COLLEGE OF LAW

Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law
May 25-June 12 The Specialized Summer Program of the WCL Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law offers 17 courses in English or Spanish taught by 33 visiting world-renowned scholars and practitioners in the field of Human Rights. Concurrent with the courses, the Academy also hosts Human Rights Month, which features special panel presentations, a film festival and sight visits to local NGO’s creating additional educational opportunities. In addition, there are social opportunities for participants to network with the faculty and with each other. Environmental Law
May 26-June 12 The WCL Environmental Law Program offers its Summer Program to law students and practitioners, providing an opportunity for intensive environmental law training during a three-week period. Courses are taught by leading practitioners from government, business, and non-governmental organizations. Course offerings include: Trade and Environment in the Americas; International Business and the Environment; Climate Change Litigation; and International Institutions and Environmental Protection, among others. Health Law and Policy Institute
June 15 - 19 The WCL Health Law Project offers a week-long Health Law and Policy Institute featuring a broad range of custom-developed courses to provide JD and LL.M. students and practitioners with an opportunity for intensive training in various aspects of health law and policy. Course offerings include: Introduction to International Health, Human Rights, and Public Health; Introduction to Medicine for Lawyers; Intersection of Intellectual Property and Health Care; Legal Issues in Health Care Fraud and Abuse; and Introduction to Health Care and Life Sciences Fundamentals. International Arbitration
May 26 - June 11 The WCL International Arbitration Program offers an intensive three-week Summer Program designed to prepare the legal profession to meet the increasing demands for international arbitration as an avenue for the resolution of disputes in international business and economic transactions. Legal English Institute
May 18-21 and August 3 - 20 The WCL International Legal Studies Program offers the Summer Legal English Institute, which introduces foreign practitioners and incoming LL.M. students to legal English concepts, speaking, and writing. Through daily lectures, written assignments, in-class exercises, contract negotiations, and a moot court exercise over a three-week period, students whose native language is not English will practice a wide array of legal English skills.
