Charlottesville, Va. — The University of Virginia field hockey team cruised past American 4-0 Saturday in an exhibition game.
The Eagles, chosen to finish third in the Patriot League preseason poll, matched the Cavaliers in the first half, trailing the 2001 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight qualifiers by a score of 1-0. It was the second half where UVA’s offensive power came on strong.
AU received strong play by senior co-captains Magdalena Aguilar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine’s Moorland) and Kate Finn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder). Six of the nine freshmen saw significant playing time for the Eagles.
American opens its season at Virginia Commonwealth University on Aug. 31 at 1 p.m.
