ROME, N.Y. — Playing for the third consecutive day, the American University men’s golf team narrowly lost in the AU Classic held in Rome, N.Y. on the Rome Country Club. The Eagles fell by one stroke to Patriot League foe Colgate. Freshman Ben Hartman won the individual title in his first collegiate tournament by one stroke over Colgate’s Jesse Smith. Playing two rounds in one day on the 6,775 yard, par-72 course, AU had one of its best tournaments in the past year as three Eagles finished in the top five. Hartman was one stroke back of Smith following the first round, but fired a 71 in the afternoon round to claim the title with a score of 141 (70-71). Sophomore Chris Schieffer placed third with a 145 (73-72) while junior David Stone was fourth just one stroke back (72-74 - 146). Also playing for the Eagles was sophomore Philip Kief in a tie for 10th (74-79 - 153) and senior Mark Nihill who finished 13th (77-79 - 156). Juniors Seth Kaplan (85-73 - 158) and Matt Michaels (85-76 - 161) closed out the AU squad in the tournament. The Eagles return to action on Sept. 28 at the Columbia’s Lion Collegiate Golf Tournament held on the Great Hope Golf Course in Westover, Md.
