Five Eagles Named to Patriot League Basketball Academic Honor Roll
Matej Cresnik leads way with 3.67 GPA

Junior Matej Cresnik led the Eagles on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll with a 3.67 GPA in international finance.

WASHINGTON - The American University men’s basketball team placed five student-athletes on the 2004 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Academic Honor Roll, announced today by Carolyn Schlie Femovich, Patriot League Executive Director.

Junior Matej Cresnik (Velenje, Slovenia/Velenje, V Ljubljani), an international finance major, led the Eagles with a grade-point average of 3.67. Cresnik finished fourth on the team in scoring at 7.8 points per game and averaged 3.5 rebounds per game. He led the Patriot League in three-point shooting percentage (.472) in just PL games and was second in three-point shooting percentage in all games (.457).

Senior Andres Rodriguez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Ignacio) finished his final semester as a student-athlete with a 3.62 grade-point average. Rodriguez, a finance major, finished fourth in the nation in assists with 225 (7.3 per game) and also had the single-game NCAA Division I high when he dished out 19 versus Navy (1/14/04).

Freshman Andre Ingram (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) posted a 3.28 grade-point average for the spring semester. Ingram, an engineering major, was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and led AU in scoring at 13.6 per game. He connected on 78 three-pointers, which is the sixth-best single-season in AU history.
In addition, sophomores Jarrod Kohl (Ravenna, Ohio/Crestwoos) and Craig Weinstein (Tarzana, Calif./Harvard Westlake School) also were named to the PL Honor Roll. Kohl, who is undecided on his major, posted a 3.31 GPA, while Weinstein, a communications major, garnered a 3.43 GPA.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the League’s six winter or nine spring championship sports. The five placed by AU was second to just Bucknell, which placed six student-athletes on the 2004 PL Men’s Basketball Academic Honor Roll.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, completed its third year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, field hockey and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
