Bertsch, Gorsegner pace AU to 4th win in 5 games in season finale

Washington, D.C. - Sophomore midfielder Kris Bertsch converted a penalty kick off his own play in the eighth minute and senior goalkeeper Mike Gorsegner made it stand-up as American held off Richmond, 1-0, in the final regular season CAA battle before 310 fans at breezy Reeves Field today.

American (7-9-1, 4-2-1 CAA) won for the fourth time in its last five games. AU got on the board early, paced by its leading scorer Bertsch. In the eighth minute, Bertsch ran onto a ball and attempted to dribble past the UR keeper near the front of the box before he was taken down by the goalie. Bertsch then converted the penalty kick at 7:00. Bertsch has 9 goals and 4 assists on the season. Gorsegner made 4 saves, many late in the game in spectacular fashion, in his final regular season performance for his second consecutive shutout.

Richmond (11-7-1, 2-5-1 CAA) had won three of their last four games. The Spiders had their best chance of the day when Mason Weems ten-yard shot was deflected with a sparkling save in the 81st minute. In addition, D.J. Tognarelli had a header the went just high in the 65th minute. Junior goalie Shawn Alexander made 4 saves. AU and UR are not eligible for next week's CAA Tournament in Virginia Beach. AU currently sits tied for second place in the standings.
