Bertsch, Kuykendall Earn Patriot League Honors
Bertsch Named Offensive Player of the Week, Kuykendall Rookie of the Week

WASHINGTON — American University’s Kris Bertsch (Clinton, N.J./Pingry) and Shawn Kuykendall (Vienna, Va./Madison) were honored by the Patriot League as the Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for Men’s Soccer. It is the second straight week American has claimed the Patriot League’s Player of the Week award, as Adam Rosen earned the honor last week.

Bertsch, a junior forward, had a big day against league foe Bucknell on Sunday, scoring two goals and adding two assists in American’s 5-1 win over the Bison. His goal in the 10th minute of the game proved to be the game-winner, and he added his second of the first half to extend the Eagles’ lead to 3-0. Bertsch now has 10 points on three goals and four assists this season.

Kuykendall, a freshman midfielder, had a goal and an assist for the Eagles on Sunday. He assisted on American’s first goal of the afternoon, just 3:19 into the contest, and notched AU’s first goal of the second half to push the Eagle margin to 4-0. Kuykendall now has two goals and an assist for three points on the season.

AU is a perfect 3-0-0 in Patriot League play, and is 5-4-0 overall, with three losses coming to teams ranked in the Top 13. The Eagles have allowed just one goal through three league matches.

American returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 14, when it travels to Worcester, Ma., for a 2:00 p.m. match with Holy Cross. It will be the first meeting between the schools in league play.

American University became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, after competing in the CAA since the 1985-86 academic year. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
