2001 Patriot League Men's Soccer Championship Preview
American Faces Lehigh in Semifinal Match

American clinched the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Championship with its 3-0 win at Lehigh on Nov. 3. The Mountain Hawks had already clinched a spot in the tournament but the loss to the Eagles assured them a ranking no higher than the No. 2 seed. Lehigh, at the No. 2 seed, is followed by No. 3 seed Army, while defending Patriot League champion Bucknell rounds out the field as the No. 4 seed. The winner of the championship tournament receives the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Championship which begins Nov. 23.

SEMIFINAL 1

NAVY (11-2-3, 3-2-2) at HOLY CROSS (9-5-1, 6-0-1)
The No. 1 seed Holy Cross hosts the No. 2 seed Navy in the opening game of the Patriot League Championship. This is the match-up of two teams who simply weren't expected to be here at the beginning of the year. Holy Cross has been the surprise team in the Patriot League this year. The Crusaders were picked sixth in the preseason poll but became the only team to go undefeated in League play and earn the right to host the tournament. Navy, meanwhile, was picked fifth in the preseason poll and comes in having gone undefeated in non-League matches. The teams tied in their match earlier this season 0-0.

SEMIFINAL 2
LEHIGH (11-5-1, 4-2-1) vs. AMERICAN (10-7-1, 6-1-0)
The No. 2 seed American meets No. 3 seed Lehigh in the second semifinal match of the Patriot League Championship at Holy Cross. American and Lehigh tied for the top spot in the preseason poll, but both were defeated by Holy Cross. American will attempt to knock the defending League champion Mountain Hawks out of the tournament. The Eagles defeated Lehigh during the regular season, 3-0. Lehigh was ranked No. 19 in the country at the time.
