Men's
Soccer Ties DC United 1-1 in Final Tuneup Bertsch Nets Lone Goal for Eagles; Open Season Friday August 27, 2001 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Playing its final preseason scrimmage before the start of the official 2001 slate, American University's men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with D.C. United, the three-time Major League Soccer (MLS) champions. United opened the scoring nine minutes into the contest. American rallied to knot score on a goal by junior Kris Bertsch, who was fed by junior transfer Jeff Kinney. Todd West, in his second year as head coach of the Eagles' program, noted that he was very pleased with his squad's effort. "It was a solid tuneup for us in our final preseason match," he said. "Obviously playing United was a great learning experience for our players, and coming away with a 1-1 result was even more gratifying." West was also pleased with the effort of his keeper, Michael Behonick. "Mike did a great job cutting off some crosses and coming off his line. He will be a big part of our defense this year." American opens the 2001 campaign at the second annual D.C. College Cup this Friday, Aug. 31, when it takes on host Georgetown at 2:00 p.m. The winner of that match advances to the championship game, to be held on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 2:30 p.m. The consolation match will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. George Washington and Howard are also taking part in the tournament. American University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 womens sports and nine for men. American became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1. AU's men's soccer program will compete in its first-ever Patriot League match on Saturday, September 15, when it hosts Army at Reeves Field at 2:00 p.m.
