Philipakos’ Goal Sends No. 13 American Past Loyola
Eagles move to 9-2 on the season

WASHINGTON — Peter Philipakos’ goal in the 56th minute gave the No. 13 American University men’s soccer squad a hard-fought, 1-0 win over Loyola. The Eagles are now 9-2 on the season (2-0 Patriot League) while the Greyhounds fall to 4-4 for the year.

American used strong defense to win the match as the Eagles fired 17 shots compared to only seven for Loyola. Andrew Herman had one of the first chances of the match in the 17th minute, but his shot was saved by Greyhound keeper Reb Beatty. The strong AU backfield of Jeff Kinney, Charlie Koniver, Larry McDonald and David Pryor kept Loyola from having many chances in the first half.

The Eagles had two more chances as the half wound down. In the 42nd minute, Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Shawn Kuykendall had a corner kick Melvin Espinal headed in on net, but Beatty was able to save. Just two minutes later, McDonald fired a bullet off of a free kick that just missed the upper left corner of the goal as the teams went to the half scoreless.

Loyola came out strong in the second half as a long ball was sent in to Vinnie Piscopo. AU goalkeeper Thomas Myers came off of his mark and was able to clear the ball away safely. The Greyhounds had another opportunity in the 51st minute as Bill Law centered the ball, but Kris Bertsch was able to safely clear the ball out of the box.

Charlie Koniver and the AU defense posted its fifth shutout of the season.

American was finally able to get on the board in the 56th minute as Kuykendall had a quick throw-in to Philipakos. Philipakos was able to take the ball in the box and beat the keeper in the left corner for his sixth goal of the season.

In the 74th minute Kuykendall sent a long ball ahead to Philipakos and it appeared that the duo would combine for another goal in the match. Philipakos’ shot forced Beatty to dive to the ground and he was able to make the save and keep the score at 1-0.

Loyola pressured the Eagles in the final minutes of the match. In the 82nd minute, Law took a free kick that bent towards the right corner of the net. Myers made a diving save to preserve the lead. Just seconds later, Scott Barnett fired a shot, but it went wide of the net.

Myers made four saves in the match for the shutout. He has now posted shutouts in his last three matches he has played and has not allowed a goal in 340:57. Beatty had seven saves for the Greyhounds. AU outshot Loyola 17 to seven in the match.

American has a Patriot League showdown Sunday with Bucknell. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. on Reeves Field.
