AU Men’s Soccer Places Four On All-Patriot League Team
Eagles earn three First-Team nods from league

Kris Kuykendall was named to the All-Patriot League First Team for the second consecutive year.

WASHINGTON — American University’s men’s soccer team was honored by the Patriot League today as three Eagles were named to the All-Patriot League First Team while AU earned one Second-Team award. Senior co-captains Kris Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) and Larry McDonald (Waddel Village, Trinidad/Presentation) were named to the First-Team for the second year in a row. Sophomore Andrew Herman (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) joined the senior duo on the All-Patriot League First Team. Sophomore Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) was named to the Second-Team.

Kris Kuykendall has played well in the midfield all season for AU, starting every match. Currently tied for third in the league in assists, Kuykendall has one goal and seven assists this season. He netted the game-tying goal against Lehigh two weeks ago. Kuykendall assisted on both of AU’s goals at Colgate as the Eagles clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament.

Larry McDonald earned All-Patriot League First Team honors.

Anchoring the AU backfield, Larry McDonald earned his second All-Patriot League First Team selection in a row. Earning three assists from his defensive position this season, McDonald has led the defense to posting a 1.12 goals-against average this season. McDonald was named the D.C. College Cup Most Valuable Player earlier this year and he also earned a spot on the Penn State/Nike Classic All-Tournament Team. McDonald was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9 and also to the Soccer America Team of the Week.

Andrew Herman was named to the All-Patriot League First Team.

Andrew Herman leads the Patriot League in goals with 11 and points with 29. The 2001 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, this is Herman’s first time on the All-Patriot League First Team. He has netted five game-winning goals this season including the lone goal in AU’s 1-0 upset of then-No. 9 Boston College. He was named to the D.C. College Cup and UConn/adidas Classic All-Tournament Teams earlier this season. On Oct. 7, Herman was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week.

Shawn Kuykendall was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team.

A two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, Shawn Kuykendall earned a spot on the All-Patriot League Second Team. He leads the league in assists with 11, which is second-most all-time in a season at AU. Kuykendall is also second in the league in points with 23. Kuykendall was named Tournament MVP of the Penn State Nike/Classic and was also on the Soccer America Team of the Week and College Soccer News Team of the Week.

The men’s soccer team begins Patriot League Tounament play this Friday at 1:30 p.m. AU faces Lehigh at Worcester, Mass. The championship match is Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League.
