Jeff Kinney was named to the Verizon Academic All-America men's soccer team

WASHINGTON — American University senior Jeff Kinney (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Men’s Soccer Second Team as announced today by Verizon and CoSIDA. Kinney is the only student-athlete from the Patriot League on the national team.

Kinney holds a 3.75 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). A physics major, Kinney has been named to the American University Dean’s List as well as the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll last year.

In addition to earning Verizon Academic All-America honors, Kinney was named to the Academic All-District team earlier in November. Kinney has received recognition for his on-field play as well. He was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Oct. 28-Nov. 3 and was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for Nov. 3. Kinney was also a critical part of AU’s 1-0 win over George Washington in the NCAA First Round.

To be considered for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and be an important player on their respective team. The student-athletes for the national team were selected based on individuals selected for regional honors which were announced earlier this month.

Kinney and the Eagles will play in the NCAA Second Round at second-seeded Maryland Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
