Jeff Kinney was named to the Verizon Academic All-District II men's soccer team

WASHINGTON — American University senior Jeff Kinney (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District II Men’s Soccer Team, becoming the first Eagle to earn the honor in 2002-03 after seven AU athletes were All-District last academic year. Selected to the team as a defender, Kinney has also seen time as a defensive midfielder this season.

Kinney holds a 3.75 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). A physics major, Kinney has been named to the American University Dean’s List as well as the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll last year.

In addition to earning Verizon Academic All-District honors, Kinney has received recognition for his on-field play twice this week. He was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Oct. 28-Nov. 3 and was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for Nov. 3. He played solid defense in helping the Eagles tie Lehigh in an important Patriot League match on Saturday.

After starting the match in the midfield, Kinney moved to the central backfield for AU after the Eagles went down a man due to a red card in the eighth minute. Kinney played very well, holding Lehigh’s Evan Bruno to only two shots on goal and keeping him scoreless in the match. Kinney was instrumental in the backfield as the Eagles were able to come away with a very important draw. Earlier this season, Kinney was named to the Penn State/Nike Classic All-Tournament Team. He has also scored one goal this season.

To be considered for Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and be an important player on their respective team. Student-athletes from Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are eligible for the District II award.

Kinney and the Eagles have their final regular season match this Saturday at Colgate. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
