Place Two on South Atlantic All-Region Team
December 3 , 2002 WASHINGTON — Senior defender Larry McDonald (Waddel Village, Trinidad/Presentation) and sophomore midfielder Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) of the American University men’s soccer team have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlantic Region Second Team. The duo helped to lead the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and seventh time in school history. A co-captain of this year’s squad, McDonald helped to lead the defense to a 1.01 goals-against average and nine shutouts this season. Named to the All-Patriot League First Team for the second consecutive season, McDonald was also the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 9 after the Eagles posted three shutouts in their first four games. After earning the 2002 D.C. College Cup MVP award, he was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Aug. 30-Sept. 2. McDonald also earned a spot on the Penn State/Nike Classic All-Tournament squad. An All-Patriot League Second Team selection, Kuykendall led the Patriot League in assists with 11 and was second on the team with 25 points. His 11 assists tie for second most all-time in a season. Kuykendall helped AU advance in the NCAA Tournament by converting a penalty kick against George Washington in the first round. He was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week twice. Kuykendall was named Penn State/Nike Classic Tournament MVP after scoring the game-winning goal in both games. He was also on the Soccer America Team of the Week and the College Soccer News Team of the Week as well as the D.C. College Cup All-Tournament Team. American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
