WASHINGTONAndrew Herman’s goal in the 66th minute helped the American University men’s soccer team capture its first game of the spring season. The Eagles defeated Wisconsin, 1-0, in a game dominated by AU. Thomas Myers and Jeff Rosenthal combined for the shutout as AU held the Badgers to only three shots.

In a scoreless first half, the Eagles took five shots compared to only one for Wisconsin. However, neither team was able to place a shot on goal during the opening stanza. AU did earn three corner kicks, but was unable to convert.

The Eagles continued to put pressure on the Badgers in the second half and their hard work finally paid off 20 minutes into the period. Herman gathered the ball on the right side of the field and carried it into the box. He made a couple of moves and buried the ball in the lower right corner of the net past a diving Eric Hanson.

Four minutes later, AU had another opportunity as Ryan Boyd fired a shot that bended towards the upper right corner. Hanson made a diving save to keep the score at 1-0. Wisconsin had their lone shot on goal in the 88th minute as Watson Prather took a shot on goal that was easily saved by Rosenthal.

“This was a good result for a very young squad,” AU head coach Todd West said after the match.

The Eagles took 11 shots in the game while Wisconsin took three. AU also had five corner kicks compared to only one for the Badgers. The Eagles did commit 27 fouls in the match while Wisconsin made 11.

AU continues its spring season on Tuesday, March 25 as the Eagles host Major League Soccer’s D.C. United in a friendly at 11 a.m. on Reeves Field.
