AU Men’s Soccer Falls to William & Mary in Scrimmage
Tribe storms back for four goals in final period

Aug. 24, 2002 | Game Stats

Sophomore Peter Philipakos netted the first goal of the game against William & Mary.

WASHINGTON — American University men’s soccer team played its lone exhibition match of 2002, falling 4-2 to William and Mary at Reeves Field. Because the match was an exhibition, the teams played three, 35 minute periods. The Tribe scored four unanswered goals in the third to take control of the game which was called with 3:45 remaining due to severe weather.

The Tribe had the first chance of the game, but Brannon Thomas’ shot went off of the crossbar. American had a number of opportunities in the first period, with Peter Philipakos and Kris Bertsch both hitting the post with their shots within seconds of each other. The Eagles took an early lead as Charlie Koniver sent a long feed to Philipakos who beat the William & Mary keeper, Trevor Upton, off of the left corner of the goal in the 21st minute.

Bertsch had a solid game in the midfield, creating a number of plays in the game. The Eagle backs of Larry McDonald and Koniver also played well, holding the Tribe to only three shots in the first period.

In the third period, an early foul on AU gave William & Mary a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Jeff Rosenthal stopped Phillip Hucles’ shot as he dove to his left. However, under a minute later, Hucles floated a ball into the box that Andreas Nydal put away off of a header. The Tribe struck back under two minutes later as Justin Smiley floated a ball into the net in the 81st minute.

Nydal added his second goal of the game in the 88th minute and Alan Golden headed the ball into the net off of a feed from Ralph Bean to give William & Mary a 4-1 advantage. In the 99th minute, the Eagles got a goal back, as the corner kick by Andrew Herman was sent into the left corner of the goal by Brett Reeder, but the game was called just minutes later due to lightning.

Upton made six saves on the day for William & Mary. All three Eagle goalkeepers played, with Michael Behonick making one save and Rosenthal saving two.
