Sept. 18, 2002

WASHINGTON — American University sophomore midfielder Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) received more national recognition for his outstanding play at the Penn State/Nike Classic last weekend as he was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Sept. 9-15. Kuykendall scored the game-winning goals against Ohio State and Penn State and added an assist over the weekend on the way to being named Tournament MVP of the Penn State/Nike Classic.

In the Eagles’ first match of the weekend against Ohio State, Kuykendall assisted on the first AU goal and later scored the game-winning goal. On Sunday, Kuykendall scored the game-winning goal off of a free kick to send the Eagles past then-No. 18 Penn State, 2-1.

The Soccer America Team of the Week consists of 11 players from around the country. Kuykendall is the second Eagle to be honored this year as Larry McDonald (Waddel Village, Trinidad/Presentation) made the Team of the Week for Aug. 30 - Sept. 2.

Currently, Kuykendall is third on the team with eight points, having netted two goals and dishing out four assists in six matches. Earlier this week, he was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week as well as being named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for Sept. 15. In addition to his Tournament MVP honors, Kuykendall was named to the D.C. College Cup All-Tournament team earlier this month.

After capturing the Penn State/Nike Classic, American now owns a 5-1 record on the season. The Eagles have moved up to No. 12 in the NSCAA/adidas poll and are No. 22 in the Soccer America poll.

AU begins a three-game homestand this afternoon as the Eagles face Old Dominion at 3 p.m. on Reeves Field. American also plays Virginia Commonwealth this Saturday at 1 p.m.

American University is beginning its second year of membership in the Patriot League. In its inaugural year it captured league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse. The University fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.

American became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001. Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, the University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
