Shawn Kuykendall Receives Second Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Award
American sophomore had goal and two assists against Navy

September 30, 2002

Shawn Kuykendall earned his second Patriot League award of the season.

WASHINGTON — American University midfielder Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) earned his second Patriot League honor of the season as he was named Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 30. The sophomore had an impressive match against Patriot League rival Navy, scoring one goal and assisting on two others in AU’s 3-0 win.

Kuykendall was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week just two weeks ago after he was named the Tournament MVP of the Penn State/Nike Classic. He earned a spot on the Soccer America Team of the Week for Sept. 9-15 as well as the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for Sept. 15.

Currently, Kuykendall is third on the team with eight points, netting three goals and dishing out seven assists in 10 matches. Kuykendall's seven assists lead the South Atlantic region. He only needs one assist to move into the top-10 all-time at American for assists in a single season. Kuykendall is also on the verge of breaking into the all-time top-10 in assists at AU.

American currently is 8-2 on the season and is 2-0 in the Patriot League. The Eagles have moved up to No. 22 in the College Soccer News poll and are second in the South Atlantic region in the NSCAA/adidas poll. The national NSCAA/adidas poll will be released later today as will the other national polls.

AU hosts Loyola Wednesday in a non-league showdown. The site of the match was recently changed to Reeves Field, but kickoff is still at 3 p.m. AU returns to Patriot League action on Sunday against Bucknell. The Eagles face the Bison at 1 p.m. on Reeves Field.

American University is beginning its second year of membership in the Patriot League. In its inaugural year it captured league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse. The University fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.

American became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001. Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, the University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
