McDonald Named Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
American senior earns first honor of year after three Eagle shutouts in four matches

Larry McDonald earned Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week award after the Eagles posted three shutouts in four matches.

WASHINGTON — Senior defender Larry McDonald was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 9. The first award of the season included all matches played in the previous two weeks.

McDonald has anchored the Eagle defense to three shutouts in four matches so far this season, including a 1-0 double overtime victory over then-No. 9 Boston College at the UConn/adidas Classic. AU claimed its second consecutive D.C. College Cup earlier in the season, with the Eagles posting clean sheets against Howard and Georgetown. McDonald earned Tournament MVP honors at the D.C College Cup. Opposing teams have only had 17 shots on goal in the four matches played this season.

For Week 1 (Aug. 30-Sept. 2), McDonald was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for his outstanding play in the D.C. College Cup.

The Eagles return to action on Friday, September 13 in the Nike Classic held at University Park, Pa. against Ohio State at 5 p.m. AU faces host Penn State on Sunday, September 15 at 3 p.m.

American University is beginning its second year of membership in the Patriot League. In its inaugural year it captured league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse. The University fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.

American became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001. Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, the University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
