WASHINGTON -- American University broke open a 1-1 tie early in the second half when Salvatore Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) took a pass from David Marut (Winchester, Va./John Handley/Old Dominion) and scored at 46:14. Peter Philipakos (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove/St. John's) followed up a few minutes later, to lead the Eagles to a 3-2 victory over Patriot League foe Colgate. American is now 5-7-1 overall, and 1-3-0 in Patriot League play. American outshot Colgate 11-4 in the first half, but the two teams entered halftime tied at a goal apiece. Marut scored at 16:10 on an unassisted goal to give AU an early lead, which stood until just a couple of minutes before the half. Colgate's Kevin Toomey set up Jonathan Cook for a goal at 42:19. The Eagles took control early in the second period when Caccavale scored the first of two goals just 1:14 into the half (46:14). When Philapakos streaked down the field and beat one defender and the goalkeep, it seemed like AU was in complete control at 3-1. They oustshot the Raiders 14-3 over the final 45 minutes. However, a Colgate goal at 80:50 made the final nine minutes a bit more exciting. For the game Andrew Herman (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside), Marut, Caccavale and Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) all took four shots. While Philipakos took three. As a team AU outshot the Raiders 25-7, and had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. American committed 19 fouls, compared to 14 for Colgate. Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) picked up four saves and faced seven shots, while Will Martin of Colgate faced 25 shots and notched 12 saves. At halftime AU held a special ceremony to honor the players from the 1978 men's soccer team. The 1978 men's soccer squad was the first AU team to qualify for a NCAA Division I tournament. American will play Loyola (Md.) next on October 22 at 7 p.m. The game will be a home game for Loyola, but will be played at the Germantown Soccerplex.
