Rivero and Vazquez Advance to Second Round at ATP Futures Tournament Eagles open season against GW on February 1
January 14, 2003 TAMPA, Fla. -- The American University men's tennis team had several members compete in the USTA Men's Futures Hard Court Championships held at the University of South Florida last week. Juniors Ruben Rivero (Sevilla, Spain/Suffolk County Community College (NY)) and Juan Jaysingh (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) and freshman Juancarlo Vazquez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Centre Educativo Superior Vocational) all advanced to the second round of the eight-day tournament. Rivero defeated Stephen Schram, 6-0, 6-0 before losing to Landan Schraefer in the second round, 7-6(5), 6-2. Jaysingh beat Ben Rogers by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 before falling in the next round to Canada's Jarred Leibner, 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 6-2. Vazquez earned a win in the first round over Evan du Faun, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The Puerto Rican native then lost to Serguei Boulanov, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(10) despite three match points. Also competing for American were senior Kyle Bailey (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and junior Jonah Fliegelman (Philadelphia, Pa./Central), who both lost in the first round. Steven Kane defeated Bailey, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 and Erik Turnquist downed Fliegelman, 6-2, 6-4. The Eagles open the spring season against George Washington on February 1 at the West Winds Country Club.
