AU Men's Tennis Closes Out at ECCs
Garg falls in final of No. 1 singles

Tushar Garg advanced to the Flight C Singles final.

Oct. 20, 2002

NORFOLK, Va. -- Fronted by the impressive play of junior Tushar Garg, the American University men's tennis team, 2002 Patriot League champions and NCAA Tournament participants, ended its run in the East Coast Championships at Old Dominion University Sunday.

"Everyone on the team has improved since last year, but a lack of summer play and competitive focus really hurt us this weekend," said AU Head Coach Martin Blackman. "The guys were disappointed because they know how hard they have been working. Our staff feels like the guys have a unique opportunity to use last year's success as a springboard to the next level."

Garg, a native of India, advanced to the final of the Flight C Singles, losing to Virginia's Darrin Cohen, 7-5, 6-1. Garg had beaten Cavalier Mike Downing in the Round of 32 (6-1, 6-1), and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Maryland's Scott Baxter on Saturday. In the quarterfinals, Garg cruised past Richmond's Jeppy Moss, 6-4, 6-3 and earned a berth in the final with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Connecticut's Matt Stinson, 6-4, 6-0.

In Flight C Doubles, Juan Jaysingh and Guillaume Tarralle had a bye in the Round of 16 before beating Delaware's Patrick Seitz and Ari Zweig in the quarterfinals, 8-5. The two lost in the semifinals to UVA's Travis Triplett and Dillon Walker, 8-5.

The Eagles head to the ITA Regionals hosted in Chapel Hill, N.C. this weekend.
