Garg advances to main draw; loses in first round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- American University junior Tushar Garg moved into the main draw of singles but lost in the Round of 64 at the Omni Hotels ITA Region II Championships this weekend at the University of North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Garg lost to Scott Schnugg of Georgia Tech, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round as the only AU representative to make the main draw.
In the singles qualifying rounds, senior Andreas Kulscar beat the Citadel's John Williams, 7-6 (4), 6-2, but was not able to compete in the Round of 32. Junior Rubin Rivero emerged from the first round after defeating Howard's Kenneth Brown, 6-1, 6-2. Rivero then lost to Florida State's Chip Webb in the next round, 6-7 (7), 6-1, 6-3.
Juan Jaysingh cruised past Hampton's Ladislav Rezac, 6-2, 6-1, but fell in the Round of 32 to Patrik Binkowski of Old Dominion, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5. Also playing in the singles qualifying rounds, senior Kyle Bailey, lost to UNC's Greg Archer, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles action, Jonah Fliegelman and Rivero dropped an 8-5 decision to Duke's Stephen Amritrai and Ludovic Walter in the qualifying round. Bailey and Jaysingh also fell to Blue Devils, an 8-0 final to Ryan Heinberg and Peter Shults.
