69 AU Men's Tennis Strong Past UMBC, 5-1 Eagles to host four matches this week
March 21, 2003 WASHINGTON -- With rain impending, the American University men's tennis team played only singles, beating UMBC Friday afternoon, 5-1. The Eagles improve to 7-1 on the year and will host Richmond on Thursday before opening up their Patriot League schedule against Colgate, Bucknell and Lehigh this weekend. Ranked No. 69 by ITA, AU has tied its highest-ever national ranking from two years ago. Tushar Garg pulled off a strong win over last fall's ITA Regional semifinalist Josef Novotny at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-4. It marked the first win in four tries over Novotny for an Eagle. Freshman Juancarlo Vazquez beat Luis Baraldi at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Juan Jaysingh earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over James Tayor at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1 while Jonah Fliegelman and Ruben Rivero recorded identical 6-1, 6-0 wins at Nos. 5 and 6.
