68 AU Men's Tennis Falls to Richmond, 4-3
March 27, 2003 WASHINGTON -- The No. 68 American University men's tennis team lost to Richmond in a nailbiting, third-set marathon Thursday afternoon at Reeves Court by a score of 4-3. Trailing 3-1 with three singles matches in the third set, American had to capture all three in order to pull off a win. The Eagles (7-2) lost the doubles point and couldn't take advantage of opportunities to beat the Spiders. AU junior Tushar Garg (Mumbai, India/Bradenton Academy) double faulted at match point with UR's David Donn before fall, 6-1, in the final set at No. 1 singles. Garg had overpowered Donn in the first set, 6-0, but couldn't hang onto the momentum. Winning for American was senior Kyle Bailey (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), who beat Derek Schwandt at No. 3 singles, 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-3. Junior Juan Jaysingh (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) earned the Eagles' first point at No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Don Scafford. Freshman Juancarlo Vazquez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Centre Educativo Superior Vocational) recovered from losing the first set 1-6 to gut out 7-6(6), 6-4 decisions in the final two. American will host Colgate on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and then Bucknell and Lehigh on Sunday. RICHMOND 4,
