Men's Tennis Advances to PL Championship Against Army Eagles beat Colgate in semifinal, 4-1
April 18, 2003 COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Down one doubles match early, the American University men's tennis team responded with a pair of doubles match wins and three decisive singles victories to beat Colgate, 4-1, in the first semifinal of the Patriot League Championships Friday morning at the Tennis Center at College Park. The top-seeded Eagles (14-3, 5-1 PL) advance to the Patriot League Championship to be held Saturday at 12 p.m. at Reeves Courts to meet No. 2 Army, which beat No. 3 Navy in the second semifinal, 4-1. The winner will play American to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Last year the Eagles advanced to the NCAAs in their first season in the league. Junior Juan Jaysingh tallied the winning point at No. 5 singles when he quickly beat Jon Bedard, 6-0, 6-1. Senior Kyle Bailey earned AU's first singles point with a concise, 6-1, 6-0, romp over Evan Ambrose at No. 3. Also winning at singles for the Eagles was freshman Juancarlo Vazquez, who struggled in the first set, 7-5, but finished with a strong forehand down the baseline for the 6-0 sweep in the second set. American was down early when the Raiders nabbed the first doubles set over Andreas Kulcsar and Tushar Garg, 8-5. With the doubles point on the line, Ruben Rivero and Jaysingh put away Andrew Davis and Jake Heims, 8-5 at No, 3. Less than 10 minutes later, Jonah Fliegelman and Bailey rallied for a 9-7 decision and the doubles point. Colgate finishes the season at 10-9 overall after coming in as the fourth seed with a 3-3 record against Patriot League foes. AMERICAN 4,
