Patriot League Champs! Eagles top Army in championship match, 4-0
April 19, 2003 WASHINGTON -- For the second year in a row, the American University men's tennis team won the Patriot League Championship in dominating fashion, posting a 4-0 victory over Army. Junior Juan Jaysingh earned Patriot League Tournament MVP honors after easily winning both of his singles matches in the tournament. American (15-3) had played a very tight match with Army (15-5) just one week earlier. However, the Eagles earned the doubles point today to post an early advantage as Tushar Garg and Andreas Kulcsar captured first doubles over Arnie and Rafael Albornoz, 8-3. After playing a thrilling doubles match yesterday, Kyle Bailey and Jonah Fliegelman easily won second doubles over Sebastian Salas and John Sabia, 8-3. Jaysingh was the first to win in singles for AU. After winning at No. 5 singles yesterday, 6-1, 6-0, Jaysingh disposed of Carl Fisher in impressive fashion this afternoon at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-1. Bailey was the second Eagle to win, posting a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Rafael Albornoz. After trailing 5-2 in the first set, Fliegelman stormed back to win 7-6, 6-0 over Salas at No. 6 singles and provide the clinching point for AU. The Eagles now must wait for the NCAA selection to determine where they will play and be seeded in the NCAA Tournament. AU will host Hampton on May 3 at 2 p.m. as a tune-up for the tournament.
