Men's Tennis Ends Season With 4-0 Decision to No. 12 Washington in NCAA
Tournament
May 10, 2003 SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Playing a much tighter match than one year ago, the American University men's tennis team fell, 4-0, to No. 12 (16th seed) University of Washington Saturday on the campus of San Diego St. The Eagles finish the season with a 15-4 overall record after capturing their second straight Patriot League Championship two weeks ago. It marked the second ever and second straight NCAA Tournament AU has competed in. After losing the doubles point, Guilluame Tarralle dropped the second point at No. 2 singles in a 6-2, 6-1 decision to No. 28 Matt Hanlin. Patriot League Rookie of the Year Juancarlo Vazquez fell at No. 4 to Christoph Palmanshofer, 6-0, 6-3. The final Husky point went to No. 10 Alex Vlaski, who beat Tushar Garg at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-1. In the matches that were not completed, senior Kyle Bailey took the first set over Fred Sundsten at No. 3 singles, 6-4, and trailed in the second, 4-5. Dillon Ruby garnered the first set over Juan Jaysingh at No. 4 singles, 6-7(3), and had established a 4-3 lead in the second set. At No. 6 singles, American's Jonah Fliegelman was trailing Pete Scharler by one set (6-3) but had taken a 5-3 lead in the second. AU dropped the doubles point as Garg and Andreas Kulcsar lost to No. 37 Ari Strasberg and Vlaski at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. At No. 3, Ruben Rivero and Jaysingh were tripped up by Palmanshofer and Scharler, 8-1. Bailey and Fliegelman were trailing, 5-3, at No. 2 doubles to Hanlin and Ruby. American is now 0-2 in the NCAA Tournament after losing to No. 17 Duke, 4-0, in 2002. Bailey set a new program record by winning the first-ever set in the tournament. AU men's tennis is the fifth team to advance to NCAAs in 2002-03 and eighth program overall this year. WASHINGTON
